The Kreg PR5000 Precision Router Lift features a precision indexing ring with a micro-adjust scale. This scale allows for the simple and precise adjustment of bit height.

Router setup and router bits are easily-changed from above the table. The micro-adjust scale zeroes out for precise bit height replication. And it fits over 20 different router models out of the box.

FEATURES

  • Above-table collet access
  • Bearing-guided carriage
  • Built-in micro-adjust scale

WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT THE KREG PRS5000 PRECISION ROUTER LIFT

The effortless Kreg PRS5000 is easy to install and offers diverse compatibility with over 20 popular models of routers.

The bearing guided carriage makes router lift operation much smoother for complete ease of use. The unique construction of the Kreg PRS5000 prevents backlash for user-friendly operation. If you are looking for a robust lift with velvety smooth adjustments, this is the lift for you.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE KREG PRS5000 PRECISION ROUTER LIFT

Unfortunately, the Kreg PRS5000 Precision Router Lift is a tight fit for some compatible router models making setup difficult at best.

The plastic inserts are significantly less durable than the phenolic inserts that accompany most other lifts on our list.

Also, getting an exact match of bit heights when changing bits can be troublesome unless you count the handle turns to match the previously locked placement.

PROS

  • Micro-adjustment increments mean exceptional precision
  • Incredibly easy to set up
  • Includes three insert rings
  • Router bit height is adjustable from above

CONS

  • The fit on some compatible routers can be tight
  • Plastic inserts
  • Exact bit height replication is difficult

2. JESSEM ROUT-R-LIFT II ROUTER LIFT 02310

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

The JessEm Rout-R-Lift II Router Lift 02310 is made from aluminum and features a phenolic top plate, which means durability and aesthetics without a heavy-duty price tag.

The lift is easily mounted and hydraulically pressed shafts fastened to the top plate at multiple anchor points means a hard-wearing router lift.

It also features a dedicated cam-lock mechanism to prevent any spindle rotation. And the micro-adjustment tool allows for precise bit height adjustment.

If you are looking for commercial-grade quality at a residential price, this is the router lift for you.

FEATURES

  • Dedicated cam-lock mechanism
  • Built-in table snuggers
  • The tab-Loc insert ring design
  • Two knobs for lifting and locking

WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT THE JESSEM ROUT-R-LIFT II ROUTER LIFT 02310

The JessEm Rout-R-Lift II Router Lift 02310 is an affordable but heavy-duty router upgrade that offers the high-quality expected of the Jessem brand.

This reinforced router lift is smooth and accurate, and the locking mechanism gives you a little more confidence with each cut you make.

The JessEm Rout-R-Lift II Router Lift 02310 is a good option for the woodworking novice who is looking for their first router lift.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE JESSEM ROUT-R-LIFT II ROUTER LIFT 02310

Unfortunately, the JessEm Rout-R-Lift II Router Lift only comes with one insert and if you want to purchase others, know that they are quite expensive and have limited availability.

Also, depending on the router, the router lift needs a set of corner brackets for compatibility. These are available separately and can be purchased from JessEm (although they can also be quite costly.)

Lastly, the JessEm Rout-R-Lift II Router Lift is quite limited when it comes to compatibility with other brands; this makes it less flexible than other router lifts on our list.

PROS

  • Affordability
  • Reinforced top plate
  • Easily leveled
  • Simple setup

CONS

  • Includes only one insert ring
  • Additional insert rings and accessories are expensive
  • The scale does not zero out

We recommend this router lift for anyone looking for a reliable high-end middle-of-the-road lift.

  • Quick-Lift wrench for collet elevation

WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT THE WOODPECKERS PRL-V2-420 PRECISION ROUTER LIFT

The spring-assist lift wrench on the Woodpeckers PRL-V2-420 Precision Router Lift significantly reduces adjustment time but still provides heavy-lifting capability.

The stainless steel of the Woodpeckers PRL-V2-420 Precision Router Lift makes it exceptionally durable.

This router lift thumbwheel for micro-adjustments also provides impeccable control over the smallest of adjustments.

We recommend this router lift for the seasoned woodworker looking for more attention to detail.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE WOODPECKERS PRL-V2-420 PRECISION ROUTER LIFT

Unfortunately, the Woodpeckers PRL-V2-420 Precision Router Lift micro wheel can have some issues with drag that throws off the accuracy of measurements.

Also, the spring-assisted quick lift feature does have a learning curve that can hamper productivity and accuracy.

Lastly, this router lift is much harder to clean than many of the other router lifts on our list. This problem can create a buildup of debris that compromises lift function.

  • Very precise micro-adjustments

  • Adjustable reference scale

CONS

  • Thumbwheel can be stiff

The durability of this lift and the flexibility offered by the added insert rings make this the perfect kit if your woodworking shop requires more range.

The sealed bearings on the JessEm 02120 Mast-R-Lift II Router Lift reduce the frequency of the need for maintenance and improve affordability as well as consistency.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE JESSEM 02120 MAST-R-LIFT II ROUTER LIFT AND 10-PIECE INSERT RING KIT WITH CADDY BUNDLE

Unfortunately, the JessEm 02120 Mast-R-Lift II Router Lift And 10-Piece Insert Ring Kit with Caddy Bundle is difficult to level, and the hard to follow instruction manual only complicates this issue.

Also, this router lift does have limited compatibility, which creates limitations not found on more universally compatible router lifts on our list.

Lastly, the price tag for this router lift is a little higher than it should be for an aluminum lift. Other router lifts on our list offer harder wearing components for a similar price.

WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT THE ROCKLER PRO LIFT ROUTER LIFT

The Rockler Pro Lift Router Lift high and low gears are exceptionally convenient, and the tool-free insert ring only adds to this.

The anti-backlash mechanism on this lift makes for incredibly accurate cuts and frustration-free replication.

Steel guideposts and the thick aluminum plate allow for regular use and durability.

We recommend the Rockler Pro Lift Router Lift With 8-1/4 By 11-3/4 Inches Mounting Plate for the experienced woodworker who is looking for convenience.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE ROCKLER PRO LIFT ROUTER LIFT

Unfortunately, the Rockler Pro Lift Router Lift (8-1/4-inch x 11-3/4-inch plate) is hard to install and level, making it less than ideal for novice or precision woodworkers.

Also, the router lift gear can be sticky that can create problems with consistency, and be exceptionally frustrating as far as micro-adjustments are concerned.

FEATURES

  • MagnaLOCK reducing ring system
  • Cam router adjustment system
  • Five steel reducing rings
  • Spindle lock

WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT THE INCRA MAST-R-LIFT-II-R FOR ROCKLER TABLES

The Incra Mast-R-Lift-II-R For Rockler Tables is fast and easy to set up – due in part to the easy to follow instruction manual.

This router lift is sturdy and built to last. Despite being so robust, however, this router lift still offers incredible precision.

The five ball bearing system means incredibly fluid movement while still providing complete control.

We recommend the Incra Mast-R-Lift-II-R For Rockler Tables for the experienced woodworker, but not the novice.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE INCRA MAST-R-LIFT-II-R FOR ROCKLER TABLES

Unfortunately, the Incra Mast-R-Lift-II-R For Rockler Tables does not feature a rapid lift bit change option, which means that it is slightly less efficient than other router lift options.

Also, the plates for the Incra Mast-R-Lift-II-R For Rockler Tables are proprietary to Rockler, which creates problems if you are looking to add the lift to an existing table with alternate dimensions.

Lastly, the inability to zero the height gauge means having to spend time resetting when changing bits.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE SAWSTOP FOUR-POST ROUTER LIFT WITH LOCK

Unfortunately, the Sawstop Four-Post Router Lift With Lock has limited compatibility that makes it incompatible with many higher-end routers.

Additionally, finding a list of those routers that are compatible with this unit is difficult.

Also, the Sawstop Four-Post Router Lift With Lock only includes two adaptive collars, and additional accessories are pricey, limiting initial use.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE GRIZZLY INDUSTRIAL T28781 ROUTER TABLE WITH LIFT AND CAST IRON WINGS

Unfortunately, the Grizzly Industrial T28781 Router Table With Lift And Cast Iron Wings is not as ideal for smaller projects with the cast-iron wings in place.

Also, although Grizzly is an industrial brand, they are not one of the more highly recommended brands for router lifts when compared to the competition.

Lastly, compared to other router lifts, the Grizzly Industrial T28781 is unusually loud.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE JESSEM 02322 ROUT-R-LIFT PRESTIGE PLUNGE BASED ROUTER LIFT (IMPERIAL UNITS)

Unfortunately, the JessEm 02322 Rout-R-Lift Prestige Plunge Based Router Lift (Imperial Units) manual can be quite confusing – particularly for the novice woodworker.

Also, over time, the thread tension of the JessEm 02322 Rout-R-Lift Prestige Plunge Based Router Lift (Imperial Units) may need resetting.

Lastly, depending on your router, you may have to invest in additional mounting plates and corner brackets.

The Jet 708124 Xlift-K: Xacta-Lift Router Ins With Dlx Fence is a commercial-grade router lift, which means exceptional durability.

This router lift also accommodates larger router bits, which makes it a more flexible tool than other router lifts on our list.

The Jet 708124 Xlift-K: Xacta-Lift Router Ins With Dlx Fence is one of very few router lifts designed to accommodate fixed routers as well as plunge routers.

We recommend this router lift for the woodworker looking for a lift that is compatible with plunge routers and static base routers.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE JET 708124 XLIFT-K: XACTA-LIFT ROUTER INS WITH DLX FENCE

Unfortunately, the Jet 708124 Xlift-K: Xacta-Lift Router Ins With Dlx Fence uses a belt-driven system crank, and that creates a problem with slack when changing directions.

Also, because of the unique design, this router lift is not compatible with most after-market router lift accessories.

THE FINAL VERDICT

So, which of these router lifts do we recommend? Which offers the most flexibility, durability, and ease of use?

The best router lift is number 1, the Kreg PR5000 Precision Router Lift. There are several reasons why this was our top pick.

First, it is compatible with a variety of router brands, but particularly many of the larger and higher-end brand products.

We love the instant bit height modification made possible by the micro-adjust scale and the precision ring index.

The great design of this router lift makes it the ideal choice for novice and expert woodworkers. From easy installation to smooth operation, this router lift offers it all.

For the Kreg PR5000 Precision Router Lift to hit as many high notes as it does while still being one of the most affordable router lifts on our list is pretty amazing!

BUYERS GUIDE – WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A ROUTER LIFT

COMPATIBILITY

The first, and most important thing to look for when buying a router lift, is compatibility.

Your router lift must be compatible with your router.

Compatibility may be direct compatibility – for example, your router and router lift fit together – or modified compatibility – for example, the router lift can be made to be compatible with your router through a modification kit.

When looking for compatibility, be sure to look for brand AND specific model compatibility!

FEATURES

The second thing to look for when shopping for a router lift is the number of features that a router lift offers.

Depending on your budget, you can buy a lift that has all of the bells and whistles, or you may be more limited in your selection.

If your budget is more limited, make a list of the features that you want from your lift and prioritize them. Prioritizing allows you to choose the best router lift for your needs that is still within your budget.

Some of the more popular qualities and features on router lifts include

  • Ball bearings for a smoother lifting motion
  • Twist lock rings for more accuracy and control
  • The ability to lock in settings
  • Auto-leveling system
  • Cross-compatibility
  • Ease of setup
  • Insert selection
  • Versatility
  • Ability to handle larger projects

DURABILITY

The third thing to look at when purchasing your router lift is the durability of the router lift.

Will you be using your router lift as a hobbyist? Will you be mass producing? This frequency of use will make a big difference in how durable you need your router lift to be.

Reviews from other buyers can tell you a lot about a product, particularly when it comes to how durable that product is.

Keep in mind, when you begin shopping for industrial durability, you are much more likely to pay a higher price for your lift.

ROUTER LIFT MATERIALS

Router lifts come in a variety of materials. Some of these offer better durability and have higher price tags. Others are cheaper and more prone to breakage. Then there are the materials that fall in the middle and that are ideal for the average hobbyist.

Router lift materials include

  • Aluminum
  • Plastic
  • Alloys
  • Stainless Steel
  • Cast Iron
  • Brass

ALUMINUM

Aluminum is not the most durable of materials, but it is a lightweight and affordable material that offers midrange durability. Most quality residential and hobby use router lifts are aluminum.

PLASTIC

Plastic is the cheapest of materials, and it is also one of the weakest materials. Quality router lifts should never have plastic parts because of the frequency with which they break.

ALLOYS

Alloys are a culmination of many different metals. They are relatively weak and do not hold up well to demanding use. Cheaper products may use alloys, but if you are looking for a router lift to last, avoid alloys at all costs!

STAINLESS STEEL

Steel is one of the most durable and hard-wearing materials for router lifts. Professional and industrial use lifts are usually stainless steel. Be warned, though this does increase the cost significantly.

CAST IRON

Cast iron is another top-midrange material for router lifts. Cast iron router lifts are durable and stand up to regular use over time. Although not as durable as steel, cast iron lifts are more than enough for the average woodworker.

BRASS

Brass fittings enhance the durability of router lifts, but brass is a costly investment and will increase the price of your router lift in a big way.

FAQ SECTION

WHAT IS A ROUTER LIFT?

A router lift is a mounting plate for a router table designed to hold your router in an attached carriage.

The purpose of a router lift is to make changing router bits and adjusting bit depth much simpler.

Router lifts also create much more stability for smoother cutting motions and easy replication of projects.

DO I NEED A ROUTER LIFT?

Not necessarily, but once you invest in a router lift, you will wonder how you ever got by without it.

A router lift saves you time and frustration, but most of all, it streamlines your projects for accuracy and precision

CAN I MAKE MY OWN ROUTER LIFT?

It is feasible to make your own router lift, but it requires some knowledge and a certain level of engineering experience to get the job done correctly.

If you are interested in precision and accuracy and you lack this knowledge or experience, your best bet is always going to be to purchase a router lift.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A ROUTER LIFT?

Some of the benefits of having a router lift in your workshop include

  • Less time spent working underneath your router table to make adjustments to your router.
  • Adjustments become much easier to make, less time-consuming, and less tedious.
  • Replication with accuracy becomes much more feasible.
  • Micro-measuring tools allow for more accurate measurements and better precision.
  • Built-in safety mechanisms make your workshop a safer work zone.

DOES IT MATTER WHICH BRAND ROUTER LIFT I BUY?

Somewhat.

The brand of router lift you buy has to be compatible with your router. Some router lifts are exclusively compatible with their own brands, while others are more universally compatible.

WHAT IS A STATIC BASE ROUTER? WHAT IS A PLUNGE BASE ROUTER?

A router can either be static or a plunge base router.

In a static base router, the router bit is in a standstill position – or always in the same place. So, to make a ½-inch cut, you would set the router bit ½-inch down from the base of the router. This setting creates a uniform ½-inch cut. To change the height of the router bit, you must change the bit height manually.

A plunge base router has a plunge that makes adjustments to the depth of a cut during cutting. So, to make a ½-inch cut, you would set the router bit at ½-inch. Then, pressing down on the plunge while cutting creates variations in cut depth.

DO I NEED A STATIC BASE ROUTER OR A PLUNGE BASE ROUTER?

A lot of your decision between a static base router and plunge base router will depend on how you will be using your router.

If you are unsure which type of router is best for you, though, we always recommend going with a plunge base router.

The plunge base router can be harder to find quality router lifts for, but it offers much more flexibility.

A plunge base router can also be locked to make it act like a static base router.

If you are (or plan to be) an avid woodworker, you will (at some point) want to invest in a plunge base router and a static base router.

SHOULD I BUY ACCESSORIES FOR MY ROUTER LIFT?

Most router lifts are going to come with the accessories that you will need.

You will notice, however, that some come with more accessories than others. For example, a lift may only come with one insert. In this case, you will need to invest in additional inserts.

Accessories to look for when purchasing your router lift include

  • An installation template
  • Stock guides
  • Insert rings
  • Dust collection system

You can also look into purchasing bundled items like the JessEm 02120 Mast-R-Lift Ii Router Lift + 02030 10-Piece Insert Ring Kit With Caddy Bundle.

Manufacturers put bundles like this together. They include the router lift that you can purchase alone as well as an add-on package. In this case, it is the set of ten insert rings.

Bundles can help you to save money if you know you are going to need additional accessories.
